10 Lessons From My First 10 Years of Motherhood

Be honest and show them your authentic self in all it’s struggles and glory!

Today my first baby turns 10! The baby boy that made me a mother. How have I been a mom for a decade?!

I look back and it feels like it’s flown by but also it feels like it’s been a decade 🤪 lol. I was reflecting on what I’ve learned over these first 10 years of motherhood and wanted to share. If you are in the thick of it, take note of what this veteran mom has experienced and know you will make it through.

Learnings from my first decade of motherhood

  1. There are seasons. Some are harder than others. You will make it through I promise!

  2. Becoming a mother doesn’t mean you have to lose yourself. You just have an additional job title now.

  3. Every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Don’t compare!

  4. Give to yourself. If you aren’t well, you can’t effectively care for your family.

  5. Laughter is the best medicine. It heals all wounds - superficial or deep.

  6. It’s ok to say sorry and apologize to your kids even if they are young and don’t understand it.

  7. Give them responsibility and make them work. Kids are way smarter and more capable than we give them credit. Give them credit and trust they can do it. I had kids just to do chores. Not really but it’s a nice perk.

  8. They are always watching and listening (and repeating). Seriously, the number of times I’ve been called by the teacher for my kid saying some sort of inappropriateness is laughable.

  9. Get them involved with food early. If they make it they eat it.

  10. And this is my favorite of all! It’s ok to slip, ignore, need space, yell, cry, fail, succeed, value your time, follow your ambitions, adjust your values, give snacks, give treats, bribe, grow together, grow apart, be honest and SHOW THEM YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF IN ALL IT’S STRUGGLES AND GLORY! We are human and it’s important they see that.

What else would you add to this list?
