Diastasis Recti Awareness: What it looks and feels like

Have you heard of Diastasis Recti and wonder if you have it?

July is Diastasis Recti Awareness Month so I’m sharing all about it. Last post I discussed what it is and what it isn't and today I want to talk about what it looks like and feels like.

Here are some general terms I hear women use to describe their core or things I see that tip me off that what is going on could actually be Diastasis Recti rather than just not doing enough or general postpartum core weakness. Note: It isn’t always Diastasis with these things but they are some clues.

  • Still look 3-4 months pregnant, months or years after having a baby

  • A split or gap around the belly button

  • A low-belly bulge,  “mommy tummy”, gut or FUPA

  • A belly button that pops out where you didn’t have an outie before

  • Looks like an “alien” or “football” is coming out of your stomach when doing sit-ups, planks, push-ups, rowing or other activities that put pressure in your core.

  • When laying on your back, your belly sinks into the center

  • Bad posture with a deep low back arch and belly hanging out

It might feel like:

  • You can’t turn on or use your core when you need it

  • Good posture feels impossible

  • It feels like pressure outward or maybe even burning, stinging or pulling when you try to activate

  • Feel more pressure, work or pain in your back, hips, neck and shoulders

  • Feels like nothing at all

Diastasis Recti variations

You’ll notice they all have similarities but are each unique. The causes and healing approach of a diastasis recti also has some similarities. My online core rehab programs will teach you the foundations of core connection and healing (Core Foundations mini-course) or take you on an 8-week journey of core healing and strengthening (8-week Postnatal Core Kickstart program). Up next HOW to check for it and WHAT to check for. Then will dive into some causes and fixes!

Let me know if this is helpful. Share with any mommas you think need this!
